The Nine Foot Sumo Wrestler

Robin S. Sharma wrote a book entitled The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. In this book is an interesting story about a massive sumo wrestler that represents what we need to do in life to be successful. I have paraphrased the story below:


 


Imagine sitting in the middle of a massive, amazingly lush, fragrant green garden. It is full of amazing flora and fauna and is stunningly tranquil and silent. In the middle of the garden towers a huge, red lighthouse. As you are observing the lighthouse, the door bursts open and out charges a nine foot tall, nine hundred pound Japanese sumo wrestler wearing nothing but a traditional mawashi (that would be a very scary sight!).


 


As the sumo wrestler moves around the garden he spots a shiny gold stopwatch and moves towards it. Being a little clumsy, he slips on it and lands on his back with a tremendous thud and knocks himself out. He awakens after a few minutes due to the overpowering fragrance of a field of yellow roses right next to him. As he gets to his feet, he is startled by a path to his left which is covered by millions of sparkling diamonds. He instinctively walks down this path and is lead to a life of fulfillment.


 


So, how does this weird story relate to our lives?


 


The massive, amazing garden represents our minds. Each of our minds is an stunning creation that is powerful beyond measure. However, we need to remember to take care of our mind as we would a garden. We need to fertilize, weed and generally take care of a garden. Do the same thing with your mind. What are you feeding your mind each day? Are you learning, reading and growing or are you watching TV, spending too much time at the bar and filling your mind with violent movies, trashy novels and other garbage?


 


The lighthouse represents our strengths, mission, vision and purpose. This is the guiding light for our lives. Have you taken the time to discover yours? Without understanding your strengths, mission and purpose you will not be able to live a focused or productive life. You will not come close to reaching your full potential.


 


The sumo wrestler represents continuous improvement. Always work to get better. Live a life focused on kaizen (Japanese word for continuous improvement) in your areas of strength.


 


The mawashi represents will power and discipline. You must be disciplined and focused on your strengths and purpose to be successful and reach your full potential.


 


The pocket watch is a reminder that time passes quickly and we must remember that the passing of time cannot be reversed. Manage your life and do not waste your time on trivial things that do not contribute towards your purpose.


 


The yellow roses represent the need to selflessly serve others. When we die, we will be remembered for what we have contributed, not what we have accumulated.


 


The diamonds represent the need to embrace the present or live in the "now". Don't get hung up on what has happened in the past and don't worry about what might happen in the future. Learn from your past and plan for the future but live in the present. Worrying and negativity will not help you succeed.


 


This is an awesome allegory that makes it easy for us remember to live our lives focused on our strengths and purpose, continuously learning and improving, treating our time on earth as a gift while we make time to selflessly serve others!

Insanity!!!!!!!!!

We have all heard the comic definition of insanity...."doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result each time." This definition was funny the first time we heard it but then it wasn't so funny after we thought about it and realized that at some point or other we were guilty of this behaviour.

 

For example, how many people struggle to watch what they spend each month (eating out, Starbucks and window shopping can quickly drain on a bank account) only to find themselves in overdraft or out of money before the next pay check? Or how about sleeping in too long and showing up to work late a few times a week?

 

We know that rather than getting stuck in a routine of complacency or "insanity", we need to challenge the situation and come up with a better solution , method or process. For example, creating a system of accountability where you record what you spend each month and then consciously limit your spending to something that is well within your budget will break the pattern of insanity of uncontrolled spending. Likewise, putting an alarm clock on the opposite side of your room from your bed so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off will break the pattern of insanity of sleeping in.

 

So if this makes sense, let's take it one step further. How many of us continue to go to work each day to a job that we do not enjoy, maybe a job that even sucks the energy from our very being? How many of us have not even stopped long enough to think about what we might really enjoy doing or what our individual strengths might be? How can we find a job or a role in life that we are going to love if we don't even know what we love to do?

 

Why not change this pattern of insanity? Why not spend a few hours of study, profiles and introspection to determine where your strengths are and define your Strength Zone? After your Strength Zone is defined, then you can determine how to apply your strengths directly in the job that you have so that you are motivated, fully engaged, productive and energized. If it turns out that there is no way for you to apply your strengths at work (this is very rare by the way), then you need to find another job but now at least you know what you love to do so you can search for a job that allows you to maximize this strength.

 

I challenge you to break the pattern of insanity and define your strengths and start applying these productively in every area of your life. I am confident that if you do this you will experience a profound change in your energy, your productivity, your attitude and you will elevate your level of success to levels you have never dreamed of!

Turn Insignificance into Greatness

Human beings each have the ability to turn nothing into something, to turn insignificance into greatness. We each start life as insignificant beings but with unlimited potential. We each have a choice to make in our lives. This choice will set the course for our life and determine whether we will live an insignificant life or whether we will stretch ourselves to achieve unimagined goals, to realize seemingly impossible dreams and to positively impact as many people around us as possible.


 


All we need to do is make a simple decision.


 


Should I go for it or not? Should I strike out and take the steps necessary to move from insignificance to greatness? Should I make a move from living an ordinary life to stretching myself and striving to reach my full potential?


 


Before you make this decision there is something you probably should know. There is a really interesting phenomena surrounding our individual potential.....it is unlimited and unbounded! No matter what level of success you have achieved in life there is always more.....you can always achieve more and realize more of your potential!


 


The problem with most of us is that we go through life assuming that there is a lid on our potential, a glass ceiling that we cannot break through that was established by others and once we hit it we have to stop. This lid or ceiling could be our nationality, our looks, our gender, political preferences, our IQ, our upbringing, our parents, our social class or a million other excuses. But these ceilings are just an excuse....they are just an illusion. There is no ceiling and there are no limits on your potential.


 


All you need to do is make that decision to go for it. Don't get sidelined by excuses and glass ceilings. Never get complacent or satisfied and never stop. Always raise the bar. Concentrate on converting as much of your unlimited potential to reality as you can! Start this process by discovering your areas of strength and then leverage these strengths in every role that you have in life.


 


Live in your Strength Zone and strive to turn insignificance into greatness!

Olympics and Your Strength Zone....Part 2

I received some questions from readers on last week's blog so I decided to do an Olympics Part 2 and answer a few of them.

 

Questions:

1. What does an athlete do about an area of weakness?

2. Can the weakness just be ignored?

3. How does this apply to teams?

 

Answer #1: An athlete has a number of options when it comes to areas of weakness. I have detailed two options but I am sure that there are more.

a) They can work extremely hard in their area of weakness to get a little bit stronger. Depending on the level of weakness and how it impacts their performance, this may actually produce the results they need. However, it is more probable that the effort required to improve to a level that matches their peers is not possible.

 

Strength Zone Application - definitely review any area of weakness you have but keep in mind that you are probably better off developing your areas of strength than you are trying to improve in an area of weakness. The exceptions to this would be issues with basic competence, issues in character or issues with integrity.

 

b) They can look at another area of their "game" that is a strength area and concentrate on making this even stronger to compensate for their weakness. For example, a speed skater may not be the best in the world at getting off the starting line. However, they may be very strong in maintaining their top speed once they hit it. This skater has a few choices.....they can work really hard at getting a little faster off the start (where return on their effort might be minimal) or they can work at being able to achieve an even higher top speed that they can maintain for the duration of the race. It is here that the athlete will probably see the greatest results.

 

Strength Zone Application - this approach is almost always the best "bang for the buck". Using this approach we can leverage our strengths as much as possible while avoiding areas that we know we are simply not good. For example, someone that struggles with sales but is excellent at design work should stick with design work. Someone that is excellent in leading and dealing with others should not take a role that places them in a cubicle in the back room somewhere.

 

Answer #2: Most of the time an athlete cannot just ignore his weakness. They need to address the weakness and determine how it impacts their performance. Once this impact assessment is completed, the athlete can determine if this area of weakness has to be improved or if another part of their game can compensate for it.

 

Strength Zone Application - always evaluate your performance in any role and identify your strengths and weaknesses. Spend time evaluating your weaknesses and complete a plan that allows you to be successful without stumbling over the area of weakness. Spend more time developing your areas of strength and determining how you can apply these to enhance your performance.

 

Answer #3: In team sports, each player has unique strengths and weaknesses. Although each player has a basic level of competence that is usually much greater than the average person's best performance in the sport, the players also have unique strengths that they have developed. These strengths are then leveraged as part of a team approach. Some hockey players are great left wingers but can't play center and some players are great forwards but can't play defence. Some players are great at one on one play and others rely on their size and strength to muscle the puck out of the corners. We would not want Crosby to have to be grinding in the corners every game against the 230 pounders in the NHL. This would be a waste of his talent as a finesse player and scoring phenomena. The roles that players are assigned to is the job of the team coach. It takes great leadership to assess players strengths and set up a team for success and optimum performance.

 

Strength Zone Application - most people play in a team environment in today's world. Very few of us are independent islands. We need to truly understand our strengths and weaknesses and then sit down as a team to discuss this. Make sure that your team is balanced and that you have people to cover for your area of weaknesses and you can use your strengths to help out others that have a weakness in that area. This is what teamwork is all about....get everyone working in their area of strength and build a dynamic, powerful, unstoppable team!
