Recently I have heard some people talking about (and read some articles) on how you shouldn't live in your Strength Zone because this means that you are really living in your comfort zone and, if you are doing this, then you are not really stretching yourself……and if you are not stretching yourself then you will never grow or learn new things. I tend to disagree with this train of thought and here is why:
I believe your comfort zone and your strength zone are two very different things. I think that everyone should always stretch themselves by doing things that they haven't done before (outside your comfort zone) and by learning and growing constantly. However, you should be doing this by leveraging your strengths into new areas rather than trying to develop new strengths that are outside your Strength Zone. Remember that your strengths are a combination of your values, personality and talents and are innate abilities…..things that you are naturally gifted at.
For example, I used to play guitar and, although I mastered the mechanics of guitar playing, I was far from gifted and it certainly was not part of my Strength Zone. Now if I were to spend a lot of time and effort practicing guitar I would get better but at best I would be like a "below average Karaoke singer" and , other than having a lot of fun, I would never develop to the point where people would buy my CDs or pay to see me perform.
On the flip side, if I am good at business processes and structure, I can take this strength and apply it to a different industry than I am familiar with or in a charitable organization or a community association. I believe I would add value in these areas if I worked in my Strength Zone but I would definitely be stretched way outside my comfort zone.
I am not saying that you should not try new things that you have never done before (Karaoke, guitar, skydiving, snorkeling, etc.) because these are good growing opportunities and you can have a ton of fun. What I am saying is that when it comes to a life endeavor - a major effort in your life - everyone should strive to understand their strengths and then work to leverage these strengths into everything you do.
So what are you going to do with your Strength Zone? Defining and living in your Strength Zone is critical to your success no matter what your role in life. There is no telling what you can accomplish if you follow this simple little strategy!
